MERIAM Process Technologies Since 1911
In 1911, with his wife and children as his original workforce, Joseph Meriam began manufacturing U-Type Manometers in his garage. The need for durable, accurate pressure measuring instruments in the industrial revolution was driving the growth of the company. Within a few years, demand for Meriam products forced Mr. Meriam to move his business into a larger facility and hire a full workforce. During the WWII war years and afterward, Meriam expanded the manometer line to contain hundreds of different configurations for different applications. The instruments were adapted to work in manufacturing processes to measure differential or gauge pressures. Absolute and vacuum gauge manometers were designed for use in everything from aviation to laboratories.
MERIAM Process Technologies Builds on Basics
Pressure (symbol: p or P) is the ratio of force to the area over which that force is distributed. Pressure is force per unit area applied in a direction perpendicular to the surface of an object. Gauge pressure (also spelled gage pressure) is the pressure relative to the local atmospheric or ambient pressure. Pressure is measured in any unit of force divided by any unit of area. The SI unit of pressure is the newton per square meter, which is called the pascal (Pa) after the seventeenth-century philosopher and scientist Blaise Pascal. The lbf/square inch (PSI) is the traditional unit of pressure in US/UK customary units. A pressure of 1 Pa approximately equals the pressure exerted by a dollar bill resting flat on a table. Everyday pressures are often stated in kilopascals (1 kPa = 1000 Pa) – 1 kPa is approximately one-seventh of a lbf/in2.
