HiPot Derivation
HiPot derivation comes from an abbreviation for High Potential. Hence, the term, HiPot Testers. These testers represents a class of Electrical Safety testing instruments that verify the integrity of electrical insulation. Megger Hipot Testers Insulation Resistance Leakage Current Causes
Also under normal conditions, any electrical device will produce some minimal amount of leakage current. Dielectric Withstand Voltage Test
HiPot testing also is Dielectric Withstand Voltage (DWV) testing. This test verifies that the insulation of a product or component is sufficient to protect the operator from electrical shock. Also, in a typical HiPot test, the test connects high voltage between a product’s current-carrying conductors and its metallic shielding. The HiPot testers also monitor resulting leakage current that flows through the insulation. The theory behind the test is to deliberately apply an excessively test voltage. If this does not cause the insulation to break-down, the product will be safe to use under normal operating conditions. That’s the idea anyway.
Hence, the name, Dielectric Withstand Voltage test.
