The AMPTEC 640N Failsafe Ohmmeter

The 640N failsafe igniter tester is a ruggedized, water-resistant, portable and has been specifically designed for ultra-safe resistance testing on explosive devices (i.e. Tomahawk Cruise Missile, ESSM squibs, igniters, flares, rocket motor squibs, detonators).  The 640N case is water proof when closed to a depth of 3 feet.  The 640N also floats in water. It can be operated outside in direct rain, as it has silicon rubber boot seals over all switches.  It also features a high level 2.0 MegaOhm range to facilitate "isolated" electrical resistance measurements.

Failsafe Design - Built-in Can't Fail Life Saving Features

There are a variety of critical military, aerospace, and industrial applications which utilize squibs and other blasting devices.  In each case, it is extremely important that these devices detonate when required.  It is equally important that these devices do not detonate while being tested for coil integrity.  To this end, AMPTEC equips each instrument with redundant, dual fail-safe current limiting resistor network circuitry to ensure that the instrument test currents cannot exceed the specified amount.  Even in the unlikely event of a worst case component failure, the output current limiting network is still in effect.

Naval Ordnance Approved for the ESSM and Standard Missile

The US Naval Ordinance Center Safety Board has approved the AMPTEC 640N for use on the ESSM and NAVY Standard missile.  The 640N safety features and design make it ideal for a variety of electronic explosive device verification requirements (EEDs).  The limited access (one use at a time) external connection port on the 640N also makes it physically impossible to simultaneously connect the AC/DC Charger while measuring with the test leads.  Whether charging the Ni-CAD batteries or measuring a squib’s resistance, there is only one connection port, it's a case of "either/or" but never both.  The 640N operator can connect the AC/DC Battery Charger to the 640N limited access connection port for recharging the Ni-CAD Batteries thus mechanically blocking access for the measuring sense leads. When measuring, using the sense leads, the same limited access connection port then blocks any battery charger connection.  Contact the Sales department at AMPTEC RESEARCH for a copy of the NAVY Ordnance Safety Board Approval.

Faraday Cage provides Electronic Noise Immunity, EMP and Static Protection

The 640N electronics are encased in a shielded Faraday cage (all to chassis ground) to provide additional electronic noise immunity, Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP), and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection.  AMPTEC RESEARCH's design and manufacturing engineers have over 36 years of experience in the manufacture of Igniter Testers.  Give us a call, and let our experienced test engineers work with you on any ordnance test application.

Verify the AMPTEC 640N milliampere current output - Onboard milliammeter and Test resistors

The AMPTEC 640N Igniter tester comes with a SIMPSON™ DC millammeter built into the 640N Function Test Section. The built-in analog milliammeter measures the 640N test current and spans from 0 to 10 millamperes fullscale. This lets the 640N user truly verify that the 640N test current is at "SAFE" levels, just prior to measuring squib resistance.  See the 640N diagram below for a more a more detailed view of the function test section and the test resistors.

Safety First in Testing Ordinance Circuits

The 640N Explosive Safety Igniter Tester was developed by AMPTEC to advance and modernize ultra-safe testing of explosive ordinance devices associated with most missile and aircraft programs.  AMPTEC’s 640N not only provides greater accuracy and resolution than older, obsolete igniter testers, e.g., Alinco 101BFG or the Simpson 4000ITS, it additionally advances safety features previously unavailable. There are a number of critical military, commercial aerospace, and aircraft applications that use squibs, EEDs (electronic explosive device), detonators, explosive bolts, and a number of other types of explosive/blasting devices. It is critically important that these devices detonate when properly triggered. It follows that it is of paramount importance to know for certain that the integrity of the ordinance firing circuit continuity is indeed intact. It is also critically important that these devices do not detonate while being tested for wiring continuity/integrity. AMPTEC RESEARCH manufactures each instrument (Igniter Tester) with redundant, dual fail-safe protection which includes current limiting and resistor network circuitry that limits and insures that the instrument test currents cannot exceed specified amounts which are usually several orders of magnitude lower than the required firing current. Even in the unlikely event of a worst case component failure, the output current limiting network is still in effect.

Test Probes and Test Leads Galore
AMPTEC’s 620A-4 uses a 4 terminal, 4-wire lead set to compensate for lead wire resistance, manditory for low resistance measurement applications. The Igniter Tester uses five-way gold-plated panel jacks to conveniently accept wiring, lugs and plugs. There are many different lead termination clips and probes to select from. Please link to options and Igniter Lead Sets.
