Safety First in Testing Explosive Ordinance Circuits

The 630BN Explosive Safety Igniter Tester was developed by AMPTEC to advance and modernize ultra-safe testing of explosive ordinance devices associated with most missile and aircraft programs.  AMPTEC’s 630BN not only provides greater accuracy and resolution than older, obsolete igniter testers, e.g., Alinco 101BFG or the Simpson 4000ITS, it additionally advances safety features previously unavailable. The input lead and the battery charger are mutually exclusive and cannot be used simultaneously as they access the same connector. The output and measurement circuitry of the 630BN is certified to limit the output test current to specified maximum values several orders of magnitude below that required to fire or detonate ordinance devices. Fail-Safe analysis has been performed by all branches of the US Military, Nuclear Agencies and foreign defense Ministries. The reports are available for reference purposes.

USAF Munitions Safety Committee Approved

The 630BN Water Resistant Safety Ohmmeter (Igniter Tester) internally is identical to the US Air Force Munitions Safety Board approved AMPTEC 630BN Igniter Tester circuitry.  The advantage is the AMPTEC 630BN is a ruggedized, water-resistant, portable digital ohmmeter which have been specifically designed for ultra-safe resistance testing on explosive devices (i.e. squibs, igniters, flares, detonators). The 630BN case is water proof when closed to a depth of 3 feet. The 630BN also floats in water.  Since it has silicon boot seals over all of its switches, it can even be operated outside in direct rain.

Physically Impossible to Simultaneoulsy Connect the Battery Charger while Measuring

In addition, the limited access (one use at a time) external connection port on the 630BN also makes it physically impossible to simultaneously connect the AC/DC Charger while measuring with the test leads.  Whether charging the NI-CAD batteries or measuring a squib’s resistance, there is only one connection port, it's a case of "either/or" but never both.  The 630ES operator can connect the AC/DC Battery Charger to the 630BN limited access connection port for recharging the NI-CAD Batteries thus mechanically blocking access for the measuring sense leads. When measuring, using the sense leads, the same limited access connection port then blocks any battery charger connection.

US Naval Ordinance and Security Activity

The AMPTEC 630BN Igniter Tester is approved for use on US NAVY TOMAHAWK Cruise Missile and STANDARD Missile squibs by the NAVAL ORDINANCE CENTER.  Designed for military ordinance programs as a ruggedized Igniter Tester, the AMPEC 630BN features: a completely water-resistant main operation panel, self-contained DC ammerter and test resistors (to verify 630BN test current levels are safe and resistance ranges accurate), a notched limited access external connection port (see impossible to connect Charger when Measuring discussion below), wide viewing angle (tilted) ergonomic display - readable in direct sunlight, shielded Faraday cage for EMP protection, Electro Static Discharge (ESD) prevention, noise immunity, and more...

Ultimate Safety Isolation for Ground Loop Prevention

The 630BN Portable Igniter Tester is battery powered to insure measurement isolation from the power mains to prevent potentially harmful ground current loops. Safety doesn’t stop there. AMPTEC additionally designed a charger lock-out feature that guarantees the 630BN’s measurement circuits are always isolated from the charging connections. With the Power switch in the ‘Off’ position the charger is connected to the internal batteries but not the measurement circuitry. With the Power switch in the ‘On’ position, the charger is disconnected from the batteries and the batteries are connected to the measurement circuitry. With this ‘either/or’ there is no possibility of introducing a potential ground loop.

Measure On The Go - Sunshine or In The Rain
The AMPTEC 630BN internal packaging and impact resistant case is constructed to comply with water tight standards. The polypropylene case is water proof when closed (and purge valve is shut) to a depth of 3 feet. The AMPTEC 630BN Explosive Safety Igniter Tester also floats in water. The waterproof overlay covers a unibody aluminum front plate mounted on a water-resistant compressed o-ring in bezel construction. The Super-Bright LEDs are 5 times brighter (25,000 lumens) that normal “high intensity” LEDs, consequently the AMPTEC 630BN display is easily read outdoors in sunlight.

‘Can be Operated Outside in Direct Rain as 630BN has Silicon Boot Seals Over All Switches Along with The Sealed Front Panel and Front Panel Overlay’

Automate Your Ordinance Testing with AMPTEC's Ultra-Opto-Isolated RS232 Interface

The AMPTEC 630BN Series Igniter Circuit Tester  can be safely operated remotely with complete safety confidence via the "optically isolated RS232C interface" option.  The AMPTEC's optically isolated serial interface allows complete remote control (i.e. change to the desired range). Remote reading of the actual igniter (squib) resistance is completely controlled by the serial interface of a PC (i.e. COM2 port). For safety purposes, the optically coupled interface is designed to be electronically isolated (protected) and will withstand up to 5,300 VRMS input or output via the Option "630-232" isolated serial interface.

Test Probes and Test Leads Galore
AMPTEC’s 630BN uses a 4 terminal, 4-wire lead set to compensate for lead wire resistance, manditory for low resistance measurement applications. The Igniter Tester uses five-way gold-plated panel jacks to conveniently accept wiring, lugs and plugs. There are many different lead termination clips and probes to select from.
