Vitrek’s 944i Hipot Tester combines AC dielectric strength testing (AC Hipot) with DC dielectric strength testing (DC Hipot), High Voltage Insulation Resistance Withstand (HV IR ) with Arc Detection as well as a low Ohmic Earth Continuity measurement all in one feature-rich automated instrument. This compact dielectric tester lets you measure four electrical safety test parameters from a single test connection-all with the touch of a button.
The Vitrek 944i delivers top performance and versatility for manufacturing tests, product safety engineering, component evaluation, as well as research and development applications. Most hipot testers lack the sensitivity to accurately detect low leakage current levels. The 944i uses dynamic ranging to provide leakage readings down to 2μA full scale with 1nano-amp resolution.

Dielectric Testing Capacity to Excel
With its full 35mA sourcing capability, the Vitrek 944i possesses the horsepower required to drive today's capacitively-filtered circuits - loads which the 10mA to 25mA units just can't handle. Yet, what sets the 944i apart from the rest is its ability to discriminate between in-phase and out-of-phase leakage currents.
This advanced feature enables you to measure the resistive current associated with insulation breakdown, the reactive component or the combination of both.

High Pot Testing Background
The term “High Pot or Hipot” is a contraction/acronym for High Potential, which means high voltage. There are many similar and other popular terms such as Hi-pot, Hi Pot, Hi-Pot, Dielectric Strength, Dielectric Withstand, Insulation Resistance Breakdown and Voltage Withstand used to address High Pot testing. “High Pot and Hipot” are possibly the most internationally accepted terms for the process for applying high voltage to a circuit in an effort to determine the effectiveness of its electrical insulating materials, the value of the Insulation Resistance or the High Voltage Withstand strength (the voltage above which an arc might occur)of the Dielectric materials.
High Pot Testing can be done with either direct or alternating voltages depending on the test requirement. For alternating voltages the designation of AC Hipot is used and for direct voltages the term DC Hipot is used. Many of today's modern High Pot testers incorporate both AC-DC Hipot into a single unit. This affords the user the convenience of being able to conduct both Hipot Tests with only one High Pot tester.
The High Pot Test is the single most common form of product Electrical Safety Testing. Listed consumer products, which are line voltage powered, typically require 100% production line Hipot Testing. In addition to Hipot, protective earth Ground Bond Tests and Insulation Resistance Tests are also frequently required. The range of voltage for High Pot Testing is typically determined by the application. A general rule of thumb is two times the line voltage plus 1000V. Normally, Hipot Tests have a specific duration, for example 60 seconds. However, regulations will often allow for the shortening of the Hipot test time to as little as one second when the applied voltage is increased 20%.
Three types of High Pot tests are commonly used. These three tests differ in the amount of voltage applied and the amount (or nature) of acceptable current flow:
Dielectric Breakdown Test. The test voltage is increased until the Dielectric Breakdown occurs, or Dielectric Arcs, allowing too much current to flow. The Dielectric Insulation is often destroyed by this test so this test is used on a random sample basis. This test allows designers to estimate the breakdown voltage of a product's design.
Dielectric Withstand Test. A standard test voltage is applied (below the established Breakdown Voltage) and the resulting Dielectric Leakage Current is monitored. The Insulation Leakage Current must be below a preset limit or the test is considered to have failed. This test is non-destructive and is usually required by safety agencies to be performed as a 100% production line test on all products before they leave the factory.
Insulation Resistance Test. This test is used to provide a quantifiable resistance value for all of a product's insulation. The test voltage is applied in the same fashion as a standard High Pot test, but is specified to be Direct Current (DC). The voltage and measured current value are used to calculate the resistance of the insulation. |
