Brief Time Domain Reflectivity (TDR) Theory
A Time-Domain Reflectometers (TDR's) such as the Megger CFL800E, CFL510F, CFL535F, TDR2000/2, TDR500 and TDR900 are an electronic instrument used to characterize and locate faults in metallic cables, e.g., twisted wire pairs, coaxial cables). The equivalent device for optical fiber cables is an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). A TDR transmits a short duration fast rise time pulse along the conductor. If the conductor is of uniform impedance and properly terminated, the entire transmitted pulse will be absorbed in the far-end termination and no signal will be reflected toward the TDR. Impedance discontinuities will cause some of the incident signal to be sent back towards the source. An open cable tends to reflect a pulse that reinforces the original pulse. A shorted cable causes the reflected signal to invert in polarity and cancel portions of the original pulse at the source which is at the output of the TDR instrument. An intelligent TDR can analyze the characteristics of the net transmitted/reflected pulse combination and relativley accurately calculate and predict cable length, impedance variations, splice and connector location and associated losses.

The Megger® CFL800E, catalog number 655800E, is a multifunction instrument combining several fundamental tests in one practical, field craft test set. Integrated voltage meter, insulation tester, time domain reflectometer and automatic resistance bridge, provide the test functions for basic cable verification and fault locating on twisted pair, quad and coaxial cables.
Traditionally, cable installers and splicers have been able to use time domain reflectometers (TDRs) to find cable features, impedance anomalies and low resistance faults only (<1000 W for telecom cable; <200 W for power cable). Additional pieces of test equipment have been required to more thoroughly test and verify performance of installed cable. Installers and splicers are then required to carry multiple instruments, learn multiple product interfaces, and make multiple cable connections to handle a single job. The CFL800E provides a simpler, practical approach that can address a wider range of cable verification and cable fault locating issues.

CFL510F-Advanced Cable Fault Locator
The MEGGER CFL510F is an advanced instrument capable of identifying a wide range of cable faults using Time Domain Reflectometry technology. It offers exceptional features and a range capability normally associated with larger, more expensive instruments. The measurement range spans from 30 feet to 9,000 feet, with a minimum resolution of four inches.
Compact-Portable CLF510F Time Domain Reflectometer
The MEGGER CFL510F is a compact, hand-held, ergonomically engineered Time Domain Reflectometer designed for field use. As such it is housed in tough, ABS flame-retardant housings and protected from the ingress of dust and moisture to IP54. Additionally, a multi-purpose test and carry cases designed for hands free neck-strap and tool-belt use are provided.
The Megger CFL510F can be used on any cable consisting of at least two insulated metallic elements, one of which may be the sheath or shield of the cable. The CFL510F has internal matching networks to allow testing of 25Ω, 50Ω, 75Ω, and 100Ω cables. (These correspond to power, cellular, CATV, and telephone cable). The Fast-Find key simplifies waveform interpretation by automatically adjusting the instrument's range and gain and places the measurement cursor at the major event on the cable.
Megger CFL510F Measures Long Cables
The CFL510 can be closely matched to the cable using the balance control allowing long lengths of cable to be easily tested and faults close to the instrument accurately measured. The propagation velocity value can be similarly adjusted to match the cable; thus ensuring an accurate distance measurement. To enable a wider range of faults to be detected, the gain of the CFL510 is also adjustable which helps identify minor faults over the entire cable length.

Megger CFL535F (TDR2000/2) - Dual Input TDR with RS232 Interface 655535F
The MEGGER Model CFL535F or TDR2000/2 is an advanced instrument capable of identifying a wide range of cable faults using Time Domain Reflectometry. The CFL535F can be used on any cable consisting of at least two insulated metallic elements, one of which may be the sheath or shield of the cable. Dual inputs and large graphic display allow a wide range of comparative tests to be performed between cable pairs or stored traces. The instrument has 15 trace memories, which allows previous test results to be displayed. The included download software allows transfer of the waveform data to a computer, for analysis and storage for future reference.
Megger's CFL535F Two Color Display Choice #655535F
The CFL535F is a state of the art, monochrome or color, dual channel Time Domain Reflectometer, capable of identifying and locating a wide range of faults on metallic cables. The CFL535F has a minimum resolution of 0.1m and a maximum range of 20 km at VF=0.9 and 16 Km (48,000 ft.) at 0.65 VF. The CFL535F can perform single or dual channel measurements on a wide range of metallic cables. Active channels can be compared with each other or with previously stored traces from memory. Differential channel measurements are possible and cross talk between channels can also be identified. All results are displayed on a high resolution, QVGA color display. Full contrast adjustment provides optimum display contrast in a variety of ambient light conditions

TDR500 Simple to Operate
Operation of the TDR500 is simplicity itself. No multifunction keys to confuse the operator. Each button has its own dedicated function. Simply connect the test lead to the de-energized cable to be tested. Switch on the TDR500 and set the velocity factor. The TDR500 can inject an oscillating 810 Hz/1.11 KHz tone onto the de-energized transmission line or power line. The warble tone allows the engineer to trace the faulty cable pair with the use of a commercially available tone tracing probe.

The measurement range spans from 15 feet (5m) to 10,000 feet (2Km) with a minimum resolution of 20 inches (50cm).
Megger TDR900 Great for Shielded Cables
The TDR900 can be used for any cable consisting of at least two insulated metallic elements, one of which may be the sheath or shield of the cable. The TDR900 has automatic internal matching networks to allow testing of 25Ω, 50Ω, 75Ω, 100Ω, 125Ω, or 150Ω cables. (These correspond to power, telephony, CATV, and LAN cables.)
TDR900 Adjustable Propagation Velosity
The TDR900 can be closely matched to the cable under test using the menu selection keys. The propagation velocity value can be similarly adjusted to match the cable under test thus ensuring an accurate distance measurement. The other user adjustable setting changes the distance measurement units to feet or meters.
Ruggedized TDR900
The TDR900 is housed in a rugged ABS enclosure which is dust and weatherproof to IP 42. The unit also comes with a soft carrying case and an alligator clip adapter. It is powered by 4 AA (NEDA 15A or NR 6) batteries, which are stored in a compartment on the back of the meter.
